this story was inspired by Edward Hopper's "Cape Cod Morning"]
I wait--
the sun rises. He'll
come home, always does.
I watch,
the shadows shorten.
Gusts of wind blow
storm clouds closer.
Only
shadows now. Thunder rumbles.
I stare
past the rain, focused
on the vacan road.
Emptiness envelopes
the house
And I am
alone.
Swallowed by
the silence.
I want to believe
he is stranded, lost
in the darkness, blinded
trying to return. But,
I am lying to myself--
my beloved is gone.
